Kaluga Region has a temperate continental climate with the pronounced seasons such as moderately hot and humid summer and cold winter with a stable snow cover. Kaluga Region climate is transitional from more humid climate of the European part of Russia western regions to the more arid and continental eastern regions. The average annual temperature is 3.5° — 4.5°C, the average annual rainfall is 600-700 mm.

The average duration of the winter period is about 95 days. The coldest month is January. The average temperature in various municipal districts is from 9.0° to -10.5°C. South-westerly winds predominate in winter.
During the thaw period the daytime temperature can reach 6 — 7 °C above zero. But in this period the thaws rarely last more than 2-3 days in a row.
